I served with Company M Rangers, 75th Infantry Regiment From July 1968 – July 1969. On February 19th , 1969, My LRRP team was engaged with a VC unit. During the firefight, I was shot In my lower right jaw. We were extracted by Navy boats and returned to Firebase Barbara. From firebase Barbara I was flown to another firebase, where there was an aid station. I was looked at by a pfc, who commented, that yeah you got shot. No medication was applied, and the wound was still bleeding. He placed a band aid over the hole in my cheek and sent me back to firebase Barbara. About three or four days later, my jaw became infected to the point that I couldn’t open my mouth. I was sent to the hospital back at Long Bihn. I told the doctor that there was a knot in my cheek, to which he replied that it was scar tissue, and there was no metal fragments remaining in my cheek . My medical record state that I was wounded. The infection cleared up without any more problems. I was never recommended for a purple heart by my CO. So therefore,I never received a purple heart. After I was discharged, my civilian dentist was xraying my teeth and discovered that there is still a piece of the bullet left in my cheek.
